Maki-e is known for its distinctive, brilliant gold and silver decorations offset on a jet-black background. Just one look at the highly precise technique applied to a maki-e work will instantly bring to mind a sense of the Japanese aesthetic. The changes in design through the ages, as well as the sense of playfulness found in many of the works are easily deciphered and enjoyed by modern admirers as well.
